Gloucester Schooner LA Dunton Restoration

by Walt Ansel, Director of the HB duPont Restoration Shipyard

Walt Ansel, Director of the HB duPont Restoration Shipyard, will present a Power Point slide show of Mystic Seaport’s Grand Banks Schooner LA Dunton and her current restoration. The ship was hauled by cranes December 2022 and placed ashore at the North end of the yard on a concrete slab to keep the shipyards lift dock haul capacity open for other vessels. Dunton has lost 3 ½’ of sheer over her life time and was rebuilt in 1964 with the wrong transom shape. Mystic Seaport intends to return the vessel to her original beautiful shape and restore her hull to full strength so that she can sail again.

Walt will show historic photos, new photos and CAD drawings of the original hull shape as developed by Roger Hambidge.  Walt will also describe the challenges of partially deconstructing and “bending” a 115’ schooner back to her proper shape without cutting off large portions of the hull.
